The library project covers 300 reading spaces with electronic access at each seat, a Gibran-related collection of over 100,000 volumes, an electronic information center, video-conferencing facilities for distance learning, librarian’s administrative offices, a 160-seat auditorium, and a cafeteria.
The library building, surrounded by oak and cedars trees, is sited against the mountain and constitues a natural part of the rocky hills above the Gibran Museum, overlooking the valley of saints. The library site shall conceptually respect the history and the natural surroundings of the museum.
The library’s elements are layered into the mountain: first the reading spaces followed by the book depository protected by a double façade. A strip of marble, glass and water defines the project components, separating the museum and the library annex from the main site.
A dynamic separation expressed by a series of skewed columns, symbolizing the rhythm of Khalil Gibran’s verses in the Prophet, protects the electronic center and the cafeteria above from direct sunlight, while tying the project components together. The library is filtered through the courtyard into the ground floor activities establishing a direct relationship between the library and the museum environment.
Passive design features rooted deep in the local culture and derived from the typology of the region are used throughout the project. The exterior skin is composed of modular horizontal stone layers alternatively forming a flat opaque surface or opening up to allow filtered daylight inside. The library users will have digital access to the most of the Gibran books and paintings.
The library will post original handwritten copies of "The Prophet" and other poetry books and first paintings of Gibran, online on the internet. This will allow people interested in discovering more about Gibran, his handwriting, his first ideas and drawings, without being obliged to visit the library.
The library project is waiting for funding and donations.
If you are interested to help putting a brick into the construction site, please direct your donnation to the academy. The donator will be acknowledged upon request.
